I once talked with a business owner who was taking a large banner to trade shows. Printed on the banner was a vanity 800 number.
I asked why the number didn’t match the one on their website. Their answer:
“We’re paying for the vanity number, so we figured it looked more professional.”
That question led them to test the line — and they discovered it didn’t even ring through to their phones. They had been dragging this banner to events for years, advertising a number that never connected to their business.
